What’s Helping Me Enjoy Motherhood (Even on the Messy Days)
Motherhood is one of the deepest joys of my life. I truly love it. But loving it doesn’t mean it’s always easy, or that I don’t have messy days and messy moments where I feel far from the mom I want to be.
There are times when I react too quickly, raise my voice, or wish I’d handled a situation with more grace. Motherhood has a way of revealing our imperfectness like nothing else. And yet, even in those imperfect moments, I’ve found so much joy and growth.
A Messy Couch Moment
I’ll never forget a moment when Selah was about three (she’s 4½ now). She was jumping on the couch with her sippy cup full of chocolate milk. I was already stressed, and I warned her she was going to spill. She just giggled, kept bouncing, and little chocolate drops started spraying.
I snapped. I raised my voice, told her to get off the couch, and sent her to her room. For a split second, I felt justified because she wasn’t listening. But then the silence hit, and I felt that pit in my stomach.
Something nudged me to replay the baby monitor, which had picked up my voice. And when I heard myself back, wow. It was so clear how unnecessary my reaction had been. That moment convicted me. It reminded me of the mom I want to be. Someone who can discipline and redirect, yes, but calmly. Without letting anger take the lead.
Since then, I’ve tried to remember: yelling doesn’t add value. It doesn’t bring peace. But gentle correction can.
The Shift That Helps
One small shift that helps me in those moments is this quiet reminder: it’s not worth it. It’s not worth yelling. It’s not worth losing my peace. What is worth it? Laughing together, redirecting gently, and building trust.
Learning What Overstimulates Me
Another thing that’s helped me enjoy motherhood more is paying attention to what overstimulates me. For example:
- Saying yes to too many plans leaves me irritable and drained.
- Trying to work while Selah is home almost always ends in frustration for both of us.
So I’ve learned to protect my peace. I schedule work for early mornings or school hours. When Selah’s home, I save tasks like dishes or laundry, the kind of things I can do peacefully with her around (bonus if she wants to help).
Knowing my limits allows me to show up with more calm and joy.
Inviting God Into Motherhood
For me, motherhood has been a big lesson in letting go, and this is where my faith carries me. I believe God uses motherhood to sanctify me. Through every challenge, He shapes me to become more patient, kind, grateful, gentle, and self-controlled.
It’s not about being perfect. But being open to His refining, right in the middle of everyday life with a toddler.
The Joy in the Little Things
Selah makes me laugh every single day. Sometimes right after I’ve been frustrated, she’ll say something so funny or imaginative, and I get that choice: stay mad, or laugh with her.
I’m learning to choose laughter more often. To cherish her silly little phrases. To slow down and play. These are the moments I know I’ll treasure most.
Motherhood Is a Chance to Live Brightly
Motherhood goes by so quickly. It’s messy and refining, but it’s also bursting with opportunities for joy if we’ll slow down and receive them. I believe God uses motherhood as one of the most powerful places to shape us into who He wants us to be.
Motherhood is one of the ways we get to live brightly.
And if you’re struggling in this season, please know I see you and I understand. You don’t have to do this alone.
You can join my Live Brightly Membership, where a community of women is walking together through faith, motherhood, marriage, and mindset. Or, if you’d like more personal support, I’d love to walk alongside you in private coaching.
Either way, you deserve to enjoy this season, even on the messy days.
My girl is at school as I write this… and finishing this up makes me feel so excited to go and get her! Have a beautiful day!
