Yesterday on Instagram I asked you which post you wanted to see more:
- One mindset that changes everything for me
- How to view your feelings differently so that you’re not as frustrated by them
It was basically a tie between the two (51%/49%) and I got quite a few messages saying “BOTH!”
So here we are…
Today I’m going to share about the one mindset change that changes everything for me and on Thursday I’ll talk about a different way to look at our feelings.
A New Mindset
Do you find yourself frustrated when you’re trying to do something new or challenging? When you’re trying to go about something differently? And it seems harder than you thought it would be? Or it just isn’t working out as perfectly as you expected?
(This is pretty normal!)
Whether it’s trying a new sport. Trying to think about something differently. Or trying to push yourself in a new way… New things challenge us. Our tendency is to gravitate toward things we’re used to. Not what’s new or hard.
You’re riding your bike, and it’s hard.
You’re trying to have a good day and something seems to “ruin” it.
You want to have a positive attitude about something and all the sudden you’ve lost all concept of your new positive perspective.
“I am willing.”
THIS is the mindset has been helping me to show up even more fully in my life.
When I’m on a bike ride and it’s harder than I anticipated, I say to myself “I am willing to keep going.”
When I’m in a gym class and I want to challenge myself with a heavier weight I say to myself “I am willing.”
When I am challenged with my work I remind myself “I am willing to show up.”
Instead of “I can” or “I can’t” or “I’m good at this” or “I’m no good at this” I simply whisper to myself “I am willing.”
My favorite thing about this? It allows me to take the thinking out of something I want to do and just do it.
I don’t have to know if “I can” or “I can’t” rather… I just do. It shows me that actually… I’m more capable than I think! (And so are you!)
It throws me into action, and what I’m learning is that our (repeated) ACTIONS are what make the biggest difference in our lives.
You can use this little phrase in so many areas of your life.
What are you currently working on?
If you’re currently working on walking a way from dieting you can remind yourself “I am willing to continue trusting my body” when you’re faced with the temptation to diet again.
On the flip side… you can also look at what you’re NOT willing to do: “I am NOT willing to go back to that extreme place of derivation which always left me feeling depleted and unsatisfied.”
“I am NOT willing to obsess over food and my body to the point where I sacrifice my joy and happiness. I AM willing to learn how to take care of myself in ways that leave me feeling good (self-care) and do not come from a place of self-control.”
If you’re working on starting a business you can remind yourself, one day at a time, “I am willing to keep showing up… I am willing to reach out to that person. I am willing to go to this event. To write this blog post. To post this video…”
I am willing.
If you’re working on letting go of black and white thinking (seems to be a HUGE theme for many of my clients right now) you can remind yourself “I am willing to look at this another way.”
I shared a little message in my Instagram stories yesterday about black and white thinking, saying that when I recommend a book… it doesn’t mean that I agree with EVERY SINGLE sentence/insight that book has to offer.
No. In fact, there are a lot of books I recommend, which I get A TON OUT OF, and at the very same time disagree with several different points/views in the book. Does that mean the book is no longer valuable because I disagree with 3/50 powerful insights? No…
Rather, with any book I read I get in the habit of questioning things for myself (“I am willing to question things for myself”), deciding what resonates with me and what doesn’t. My hope is that you will do the same for yourself.
With this example… as you read a book you might say “I am willing to take what resonates with me from this book and leave what doesn’t.”
So here are a few questions I’ll leave you with today:
- What ARE you willing to do today?
- What are you NOT willing to do today?
- How will you allow this simple mindset shift to help you?
“I am willing.”
